Thumbs up Autoduel memories

Way back, after playing Ultima 4, I tried to get as many of Origin Systems' games as possible. As a Mad Max fan, Autoduel was one of my faves, especially the coolest thing on wheels: rear mounted flamethrowers! Gameplay was great, and graphics sucked in Autoduel!
My brother and I started writing a revamped version of the game, which we titled Gauntlet, and since I couldn't do machine code, I got stuck with content, plot, art, and music. The thing that bogged us down the most was doing all those godawful maps between cities... We got it up to Alpha and a half stage, with a box design and stuff, intelligent AI and some pretty character graphics based maps - our maps revealed a variable amount of the terrain, depending on your "Satellite" upgrade - a foreshadow of today's GPS. One map had a surviving Army base, where your car could have gotten secret weapons. I recall to this day doing the crater of the A-bomb that had missed the base.
