Who's behind the crime in my country? Here's some snips from the dailies. The conclusion is obvious- The Government, Police force and a terrorist organisation have joined forces. Stuff in black is verbatim quotes, stuff in blue is my comment.

"National Security Minister Martin Joseph has said that kidnappings for ransom has (sic)been controlled in Trinidad and Tobago.
He said that in this area the police has(sic) done well and will continue to do so.
The kidnapping figure stood at 163 at the end of 2004. " - January 7th, Trinidad Express.
(Barring the grammar errors for which any English speaking editor should be hung by the heels, you can see that the Minister is quite happy with the situation, and his police force.)

"UPDATED travel advisories for Trinidad and Tobago from the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States, have again warned tourists about significant increases in murder, kidnappings for ransom and violent crimes here." - Jan 20th, Trinidad Express.
(Unfortunately, nobody else is happy with the situation.)

"Two weeks ago the LA Times published a story about kidnappings for ransom saying that this country was second behind Colombia." - Jan 20th Trinidad Express

"Yesterday, National Security Minister Martin Joseph said that he was not in a position to comment." - Jan 20th Trinidad Express
Oddly, he had a comment before. Here it is- mark the date:
"In response to a question about an article that appeared in the LA Times which ranked this country as second in the world in kidnappings, Joseph said they are investigating the matter.
"It is specifically designed to damage the reputation of Trinidad and Tobago, especially now around Carnival time," he said. " - Jan 7th Trinidad Express

Curiously, the article in question appeared just after the figure for last year was published. I guess that a calendar is the likely suspect in our erstwhile Minister's investigation.

Unfortunately, in a court case now in progress, evidence given begins to shed light on the truth. PNM supporter Abu Bakr, head of the terrorist organisation Jaamat al Muslimeen, is on trial for murder. Here is some of the testimony.

"Danglade said after he went to the Homicide Bureau on July 10, 2003, and confessed to being involved in kidnappings and murders, he had been assured by a police officer that he would not be arrested for those kidnappings when he was called to return to further assist the police.
He said during his interview with Sgt Wayne Dick, the officer did not take any notes or record the interview and did not find that strange. " -Today's Express.
(Sgt. Dick however has prosecuted me for living in my own home. He represents the ruling party and maintains their interest at all times. Danglade himself is a Government employee, recieving money for nothing. - Robin.)

"Danglade, 27, currently facing charges of murder, kidnapping and false imprisonment, said when he came out of prison in 2001, "Muslims controlled everything. If you was not a Muslim, nothing for you."
He said he joined the Jamaat after taking the oath (Shahada) to become a Muslim, and soon after got a position as an area foreman in the URP, collecting $800 a fortnight for doing nothing.
"You did not have to do any work and you getting pay. I take the Shahada and became a Muslim. That is how I get a URP job," Danglade told Director of Public Prosecutions Geoffrey Henderson near the end of yesterday's hearing. " Today's Express
( The URP programme is run as Party payback by the Government, in which corruption is rife. - Robin)

"For instance, he said if he did a kidnapping and the ransom was $100,000 and the Imam hear about it, or somebody hear about it, they would want a cut." Today's Express
(The Imam is the PNM supporter Yasin Abu Bakr. -Robin)

Finally here is a reported comment by the Opposition:
" His Opposition counterpart Ganga Singh spoke on kidnapping, arguing that the resources of the police, the army and the various intelligence services were not being fully employed to stamp it out.
Mr Singh enquired rhetorically a dozen times as to why this was so; and concluded that it was because the Muslimeen were behind the kidnappings and they were the Government’s allies.
There was also an ethnic bias in kidnapping, and that must be dealt with frontally, he said, dealing with it sideways instead by lamenting that it was entrepreneurs who were being targeted and who were leaving the country in droves. " -Trinidad Guardian Feb 2nd.
